Carol Duvall, host of HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, was inspired to decorate a tote bag with family pictures by a bag a viewer sent her. The viewer separated the pockets from a plastic credit-card organizer and glued three of them onto the front of a tote bag. She put pictures of her grandchildren in the pockets and wrote "Grandma's Gems" on the bag with fabric paint (figure A).

Here are some of Carol's suggestions:

Don't use original photos--have color copies made at a copy center. Then you won't worry about losing a cherished photo.

Use plastic pockets from photo albums to show larger pictures (figure B). Cut individual pockets out of the album, and glue them with the pocket opening on the top to the front of a purchased tote bag with Tacky GlueB.. Decorate around the pockets with dimensional fabric paint, glitter, buttons or ribbon (figure C).

When using dimensional fabric paint, don't paint over the pocket opening on the top in case you want to change the picture.

Teenagers might enjoy these bags to display pictures of their classmates (figure D).

Try gluing a plastic pocket to the front of a baseball hat. Decorate with silk flowers and dimensional fabric paint (figure E).

Make your own pockets any size you wish by cutting clear acetate and stitching it to a tote bag.
