Rustic Outdoor Wedding Reception From "How To I Do" episode DHTI-101

Bride-to-be Ashley Newman designed and arranged many of the decorative items for her own wedding reception -- held at a historic farm. Here, Newman shares her designs for a rustic grapevine hurricane centerpieces, monogrammed luminaries, artichoke pot accents and wooden buffet accents.

Grapevine Hurricane Centerpiece

Materials:

Glass hurricanes, 14" high
4-5 grapevine wreaths
8" round mirror plates
(1) 22-yard spool of 1" wide chocolate brown satin ribbon
(1) 22-yard spool of 1 ½" wide chocolate brown satin ribbon
9" white pillar candles

1. Soak the grapevine wreaths in a large pan or bucket of water until vines are pliable. Next, unwind the wreaths to create long bands of vines.

2. Place hurricane atop the mirror plate, then loop one band of vine into a tight circle, releasing into the bottom of the hurricane. The band should unwind and "climb" up the hurricane glass.

3. Add candle to the center of the hurricane, within the unfurled vine.

4. Cut a 10" length of 1-1/2" ribbon and tie around fluted portion of hurricane. Tie a bow using eh 1" wide ribbon and attach to knotted ribbon at the hurricane.

Monogrammed Luminaries

With the help of friends and family, Newman creates luminaries that will illuminate the paths at the outdoor reception.

Small white paper bags
Decorative-edged craft scissors
Small hole punch (1/8" diameter)
Large hole punch (1/4" diameter)
Large monogram rubber stamp
Dark brown ink pad
Scrap cardboard
Pencil
Salad plate (8" diameter)
Sand
Votive candles

1. Place a salad plate on top of a paper bag, approximately 4" from the top, and trace a line along the edge of the plate.

2. Using decorative-edged scissors, cut along the pencil line to create a scalloped arch along the top.

3. Use large and small hole punches to randomly punch holes along the scalloped border and create the appearance of lace.

4. Insert a flat piece of cardboard into the bag to prevent ink from "bleeding" through, then press the rubber stamp into the ink pad and stamp the monogram onto the bag. Allow the ink to dry and remove the cardboard from the bag.

5. Open the bag so that it sits upright and pour just enough sand into the bottom so that the bag is weighted down. Place a votive candle in the sand and line pathway with the bags.

This artichoke pot could also be given as a wedding favor.

Artichoke Pots

These artichoke pots will serve as buffet table accents at the Newman-Hoy wedding reception.

Terra cotta rose pots (4" diameter)
4 yards of 1 3/8" wide plaid ribbon
1 bag of Spanish moss
Whole artichokes
Scissors
Recycled newspaper
