Victorian Bridal Handbag From "DIY Crafts" episode DIC-254

Lace and embellishments are used to achieve an antique look. The muslin has been stained to enhance the vintage appearance. Figure A Figure B Figure C

Craft designer Kathy Peterson creates a special handbag -- reminiscent of Victorian times -- from old lace curtains.

Materials:

New or used lace (avoid synthetics)
Scissors
Marker
Needle and thread
Embellishments (pearls, beads, lace, ribbon, etc.)
Long cord, lace or ribbon (for handle)
Fusible webbing
Muslin
Iron
Parchment paper
Straight pins

1. Use marker to trace outline of figure-8 shape. Cut figure-8 shape from lace, cutting slightly inside the lines (figure A).

2. Apply fusible webbing to back of figure-8 shape. Fuse the lace to a piece of muslin with hot iron. Place lace on top of muslin, then cover with parchment to protect iron before pressing.

3. Cut around figure-8 shape and fold in center.

4. Fold both rounded edges up to the top surface and pin into place (figure B ).

5. Slipstitch the sides closed.

6. Glue or sew lace to turned-up edges (figure C).

7. Add embellishments and handle.
