Wedding designer Mary Hollman Allen of Sew Easy Textiles describes easy ways to save time and money on bridal accessories. Projects include bouquets for the bride and her attendants, the bride's garter and a quick and easy garland for the cake table or a staircase. Materials:
Silk flower bushes Wire-cutters Low-temperature glue gun and glue White glue Flat wide lace for garland, three times longer than the desired length Infinity rings Flat lace, 1" to 1 1/2" wide Floral wire Drawstring lace (with a channel down the middle) Elastic lace Safety pin Corsage pins Small ribbons and lace Floral embellishments Pearls on a string Scissors Bridesmaid Bouquets - Using a silk floral bush for the base of the bouquets, cut back the stem end to a length that's comfortable to hold. Silk flowers are less expensive than fresh flowers and can be reused.
- Using low-temperature glue so the lace won't melt, place glue at the top of the flower stem, secure the end of the small flat lace, and wrap the stem with lace. Glue lace at the bottom of the stem; trim off excess lace. Lace gives the bouquet a Victorian look.
- Tie a piece of drawstring lace around the stem to make a double ruffle. The trick is to pull the drawstring from each end of the lace. Tie the drawstring closed with a knot. Add a touch of glue to the knot, and trim the ends (figure A).
- Cut 12" pieces from the smaller of the two flat lace ribbons. Form two loops in the shape of the letter M, and wrap a piece of wire around the bottom, securing the two ends and the middle of the M.
- Place a small amount of white glue on the base of the lace loops, and slide them between the flowers. Glue on lace loops until the bouquet is full. The average bouquet takes approximately 6 1/2 yards (figure B).
Bride's Garter Cut channel lace two to three times the width of the bride's thigh just above the knee. Replace the channel cord with elastic lace. Pin a safety pin on one end of the elastic for easy threading. Tie in a double knot, and bury the knot inside the channel. Embellish with ribbon, ribbon flowers and pearls. To make a quick and easy collar bow, take a 6" piece of ribbon, and, pretending you're going around a person's neck, cross the ends in front (it will look like the red ribbons used for AIDS awareness). Bring the portion of the loop that would be at the back of the neck together with the crossed ribbons in the front. Place a piece of floral wire around the twist to hold the bow together (it's easier to twist the ribbon than the wire). Garland Using large lace, follow the instructions for infinity rings, pulling a loop of lace through each side of the ring. Use one infinity ring for each end of the garland and enough in the center to create graceful drapes. Decorate the tips of the draping points with ribbon and silk flowers (figure C). Note: - Infinity rings look like two circles configured in a V shape and can be found at fabric stores. In most cases, loops of fabric or lace are pulled through each ring from behind.
