2 pieces of fabric - Stain the box (figure A) and allow it to dry. You can brush or wipe stain on, whatever you prefer. Just put it on nice and smooth. Be sure to stain the bottom, but do not stain the top of the box.
- Select map section and cut it out the size of your box lid plus 1/2", leaving 1/2" as an overhang. You could choose a map of some place that holds special memories, etc. Because a map has creases in it that cannot be removed, you can crumble the map up nice and hard and then smooth it back out (figure B). This will add dimension to your map by highlighting the mountainous regions and water.
- Use a foam brush and decoupage glue to coat the box top.
- Apply your map and smooth it with rolling tool (figure C), and then allow it to dry.
- Before you apply your final coating, flip the box over and take a pencil and trace around the box (figure D). Trim excess map from edges with craft knife.
- Using sponge brush, apply 2 to 4 coats of decoupage glue to seal map and acquire desired finish.
- Allow to dry completely, spray with satin topcoat spray on the top, bottom and sides.
- Cut two pieces of fabric for the inside of the box leaving 1/2" all the way around. Turn the 1/2" under and press it down nice and flat.
- Using glue gun (figure E), glue around the inside edges of the top and bottom of the box. Lay fabric in the box and smooth down.
Note: You can use any type of fabric for the inside, or you can paint or stain it instead of using material. - Fill with mementos from trip and enjoy.
