Stencils are a good way to accentuate trey ceilings like the one in this project. Golden plans to stencil an elaborate design in all four corners of the ceiling. Laser-cut stencils offer more detail than traditional stencils. A variety of stencils may be found at home-improvement stores.

    1. Spray the back of the stencil with spray adhesive to help adhere it to the ceiling. Add painters tape to the stencil for added security to keep it in place.

    2. Paint over first stencil using a thick, dense stencil brush (figure A).

    3. Use a small stencil brush to add shadow (figure B).

Expert tip: Stencil artist Jan Dressler cautions not to use too much paint when stenciling. Dip the brush into the paint and wipe most of it onto a paper towel. This will help control the paint bleeding through the stencil.

    4. When using a complex stencil (with more than one stencil per design), place a pencil mark through the registration marks of the first stencil (figure C).

    5. Match the pencil marks on the ceiling with the registration marks on the second stencil and secure stencil into place.

The finished ceiling (figure D) adds elegance and more detail to the room.
