Embossed-leather walls, while luxurious, are often expensive (and usually professionally done). Decorative artist Melanie Royals says the same look can be simply and inexpensively achieved, however, with joint compound and glazing. Materials: Latex paint Joint compound Universal tint (same shade as paint) Stencils Blue painter's tape Adhesive spray Plastic knife Sandpaper Foam brush - First, prime wall with latex paint (if necessary).
- Tint joint compound with universal tint (figure A) in same shade as paint.
- Decide spacing for stencils and mark placement with blue tape.
- Adhere stencil to wall using a light mist of adhesive spray (three or four stencils may be applied to the wall at one time).
- Beginning with a walnut-size glob of joint compound, use plastic knife to spread in a thin, even layer (figure B). Thoroughly cover entire stencil and edges of the pattern.
- After covering entire stencil, pull stencil off wall to reveal the pattern.
- Allow joint compound to dry. Use sandpaper to smooth any uneven areas or blemishes (figure C).
- Use the foam brush to glaze the joint compound (figure D) with premixed latex glaze. Make sure to apply glaze to all grooves and impressions.
- Blend the edges out with a rag.
- For more protection and a low sheen, apply a light layer of wax or stain varnish over the glaze.
