    Figure A

Stenciling expert Cynthia Willoughby uses stenciling on walls to create a romantic, Old World scroll.

    Materials:

Scroll stencil or stencil of choice
2 shades of craft paint in 2-oz. squeeze bottles (one slightly darker than the other)
Paper or plastic plates for use as palette
    Paper towels
    Blue painter's tape
    Pencil
    1" stencil brush
    5/8" stencil brush

    1. Begin by securely taping stencil to wall using blue painter's tape at desired starting place.

    2. Next, mark stencil registration holes on wall, or apply another piece of tape under stencil to mark on.

    3. Thoroughly load 1" brush with the lighter paint selection and rub excess off on paper towel.

    4. With lighter color, begin stenciling at upper edge of scroll, continuing until all parts have been stenciled (figure A).

    5. Using 5/8" brush loaded with darker paint color, stencil along bottom edge of each to add shading.

    6. Once all scrolls have been completed, remove stencil.

    7. Reposition stencil, tape and mark new registration holes.

    8. Repeat steps 1-5 until walls are completed as desired.
