Crafter and author Maria Filosa, who in 1994 was nominated for the Craft Designer of the Year Award by the Society of Craft Designers, makes a customized backgammon board, using Con-TactB. paper and spray paint.

    Materials:

Wooden board cut to desired size
    Con-Tact paper
    Craft knife
    Cutting mat
    Ruler
    Pencil
    Paper
    Sandpaper
Cardboard box (large enough to place board inside for spray-painting)
    Spray paint
    Sealer, matte or glossy
    Tack cloth
    Paper plate
    Masking tape or painter's tape
    1" dowel
    Power saw

    1. Sand the board with fine sandpaper and wipe with a tack cloth to remove particles. Place the board inside a cardboard box that is positioned to stand on end to prevent overspray. Spray-paint the board with chosen base color -- in this case, gold. Let dry. Seal the paint with sealer.

    2. Decide on the dimensions of the backgammon board and draw them on paper. Make a backgammon triangle template by drawing the elongated triangles on Con-Tact paper with a ruler and pencil to match the dimensions of the board. Cut each triangle out, using a craft knife and cutting mat to protect the work surface (figure A).

    3. Remove the backing from one of the Con-Tact paper triangles, and attach it to the board with the base of the triangle running along one of the long sides of the board. Place another Con-Tact paper triangle next to the first one without removing the backing, to provide a spacer. Remove the backing from a third Con-Tact paper triangle, and place it next to the spacer. Attach it to the board. Remove the second paper triangle (figure B).

    4. With the triangle Con-Tact paper pieces in place, put the board inside the cardboard box, and spray-paint with a second color (in this case, red). The Con-Tact paper pieces will mask the designated areas of the game board from the paint. Let dry. Apply sealer and let dry.

    5. Remove the backing from a Con-Tact paper triangle and attach it to the board between the Con-Tact paper triangle pieces that are already attached to the board. This will mask the area from the next color of spray paint. Continue placing Con-Tact paper triangles on the rest of the board (figure C).

    6. Place the board inside the cardboard box and spray-paint it. Green paint was used this time. Seal the paint and let dry.

    7. Remove the Con-Tact paper triangles. The board will now be painted green with alternating gold and red triangles in the backgammon game configuration (figure D).

    8. If any of the paint color has bled through the Con-Tact paper triangles along the edges, spray a little of the appropriate color onto a paper plate, and use a small brush to touch up the triangles (figure E).

    9. If you wish to add a border and a center line to the board, mask off the center of the board using masking or painter's tape, and spray-paint the border color around the edges of the board, with the board inside the cardboard box to prevent overspray. Let dry and seal.

    10. Peel away the masking tape (figure F).

    11. To make game pieces, use a power saw to slice 1/2" pieces from a 1"-diameter wooden dowel. Spray-paint them the appropriate colors. Or use spray-painted bottle caps (figure G).
