    1. Cover the front and back of the journal with paper. Cut a strip of coordinating paper for the book spine 4-1/2" wide by the length of the book. Apply tape to the wrong side of spine paper and press into position.

    2. Measure and mark the hole placement. Drill holes into the front and back cover of the spine. Use hemp to lace through holes (figure A).

    3. Book plate. Flatten Sahara clay to 1/8". Sprinkle the surface of the clay with baby powder to keep from sticking to book plate. Embed the book plate into clay. Remove template and gently cut out (figure B).

    4. Fold an index card in half and bend the clay in half and place over the card (figure C). Use a ball of foil to prop open while baking.

    5. Rub on acrylic paint to highlight the embossed design (figure D). Wipe off the paint. You can add as much paint as you want.

    6. Clay strip. Flatten chocolate clay to approximately 1/8" thick. Press in design with stamp. Cut strip to desired width.

    7. Key. Flatten the clay to 1/4" thick. Press in key or other embellishment (figure E). Bake at 265 degrees for 30 minutes and cool.

Note: Make sure the embellishment will withstand baking temperature.

    8. Remove the key and apply powder to inside of the mold. Press in clay. Remove and cut out the key. Bake for 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Apply Gold Leaf to the entire key.

    9. Letter tiles. Flatten Sahara and Chocolate clay to 1/8" thick. Cut out 1" squares. Press letter stamps into square tiles. Make letters from both Sahara and Chocolate clay. Gently press any texture desired into tiles to give them a distress appearance.

    10. Photo mount. Flatten translucent clay. Impress with desired texture. Cut out using photo mount as a template. Stamp in desired words.

    11. Bake all components in oven at 265 degrees for 30 minutes. Allow to cool.

    12. Apply brown acrylic paint to photo mount and book plate. Wipe off to reveal desired effect. Sand the edges slightly to distress.

    13. To make the tiles apply ebony to the surface of one or two of the tiles as desired. Repeat this using Ebony and Brown acrylic. Allow to dry. Sand the surface to reveal the highlights and texture.

    14. Glue photo and embellishments into place where desired.
