A Star is Born on Romper Room Retro TV Book

    1. Trace the outline of the photo onto the cover.

    2. Using a second book, round the corners to mimic a retro TV screen (figure A).

    3. With a craft knife and mat, cut the center of the "screen" out.

    4. With scissors, cut straight edges of the book to create the rounded appearance of a retro TV.

    5. Paint the outside of the book black. Allow to dry.

    6. Paint over the black with gold paint (figure B). Also paint the edges of the book pages. Allow to dry.

    7. Remove one side of a "pop dot" cover. With a #8 brush, paint the sides and top of the pop dot with black paint. Paint three dots. Allow to dry.

    8. Remove the backing of the unpainted side of pop dot and apply the three dots to the right side of the "screen" (figure C). Cover the top with a clear "Art Dome" to give it the appearance of a knob.

    9. Open the book and put paper behind each side to protect the pages. Paint the inside with red paint. Allow to dry well, then "slip slap" gold paint over the top. Allow the paint to dry well.

Note: Paper paint dries quickly because it soaks into the paper.

    10. With roller adhesive, glue in embellishments and photo.

    11. Add journaling to bring the theme of the book together

    12. Use a little twisted wire to create the antenna.

    Tips:

    • Learn to think outside the box. You have many skills as a scrapbooker and they don't always have to be used in a traditional scrapbook. Creating or adapting a blank book to a mini-scrapbook is a great way to encapsulate a single episode in your life, to share an event with others, or to create a book to help your children learn about your life.

    • Just because a book is a specific shape when you buy it, doesn't mean you can't adapt it for your use. In this case, I had a blank board book with two rounded edges and two straight. Simply cut the straight edges to give the appearance of the rounded TV's of the '60s.
