Project by Ginger Rohlfs.Ginger shares tips on how to create a quick and easy page with the "rule of three" design.
Materials:
Imagination Project Gen-X patterned paper: Andie's Prom Dress, Crocodile Sweater, Andie, Blah Blah Blane
Imagination Project Gen-X "She Wears Pink" card stock stickers
Making Memories charmed frame
Clearsnap Colorbox chalk ink
Offray ribbon
black brad
Xyron 150 with adhesive
1. Trim "Crocodile Sweater" to approximately 10-1/2" x 6-1/4", keeping argyle diamonds vertical. Trim "Blah Blah Blane" to approximately 10-1/2" x 4".2. Cut out two flowers of different sizes (we chose the darker pink in the medium and small) from the "Andie's Prom Dress" paper and crinkle to create dimension (figure A).
3. Determine which card stock stickers will be layered at the bottom of the layout. Make sure to leave a border around the placement as this will help give a dimensional effect once the stickers are inked.
4. Ink the edges of both "Crocodile Sweater" and "Blah Blah Blane" papers. Inking should be done by holding the paper at an angle and brushing lightly against the pad. Edges should be a little messy with ink to create dimension. Overall effect of inking is to add a dimensional effect and bring focus to the shape.
5. Attach both pieces to "Andie" background after ink has dried. "Crocodile Sweater" is attached to the upper half of the page and "Blah Blah Blane" to the bottom of the page (figure B).
6. Run approximately 14 inches of Offray Ribbon through the Xyron 150 to apply an even layer of adhesive. Place on top of "Crocodile Sweater" and wrap the remainder around to the back of the page.
7. Peel off appropriate card stock stickers, making sure to ink the edges of each sticker before placing on the "Blah Blah Blane" paper. Stickers should be evenly spaced and linear (figure C). The best way to ink the cardstock sticker is once it's removed, hold onto the sticker in the middle and ink around the edges. The sticker should retain its tackiness for placement.
8. Use the "Memories" sticker as an insert to the Making Memories frame to create dimension.
9. Mat two photos (approximate size is 5-1/2" x 4" and 4" x 4-1/2") with the remainder of the "Blah Blah Blane" paper and ink the edges as well. Inking should be done after matting so that you can gauge how much of an inking effect you want.
10. Finish up the background of the layout by running the ink pad along the edge of the entire piece of "Andie" paper. This will create an added dimension to the layout.
11. Create the final embellishment by inking the edges of the cut flower pieces (see again figure A) and then placing on a flat surface. Gently tap the pad over the flower to sponge the ink, thus creating an aged embellishment.
12. Layer smaller flower over larger flower and attach to the layout using a brad (figure D).
There are numerous techniques used in this layout which include inking, layering and attaching dimensional embellishments. The main focus, however, is to show how the "Rules of Three" apply to creating a layout in less than thirty minutes. In this case, there are three papers used as well as three textures being demonstrated. Knowing that each layout should include at least three textures and three papers will allow a scrapbooker to complete more layouts in less time because they know what to look for when determining if a layout is complete. Often times, scrappers will work on a layout and feel as though something is missing. In the case of applying the Rule of Three, scrappers can check to see if all of the requirements of the "rules" are met when putting a layout together. This will give them a guideline that they can follow in order to complete layouts in a faster timeframe. They will not spend additional time trying to figure out what element is missing. These rules can be applied to different styles of scrapbooking, including simple and linear to the more advanced collage.
