  • Eight-Point Star Paper Quilt
  • From "Scrapbooking"
    episode SCB-415

    PHOTO
    Project by Monica Garrett-Hughes.

This project modifies an Eight-Point Star pattern to create a cuddly variation of the Nine Patch block design. Scraps of card stock from previous projects and a handful of pictures that would normally be relegated to the "too much background/not enough subject" pile were incorporated into the focal design. Bonus: Adding the geometric shapes to the border gives the illusion of a block within a block, another popular quilting technique.

    Materials:

dark blue, burgundy, rose parchment, blue parchment card stock scraps *

    burgundy card stock

    Figure B
    1. Stamp and emboss the top half of the Eight-Point Star on four scraps of blue parchment card stock.

    2. Trim below the center line indicating the top half of the design. Trim close to outside borders of image.

    3. Attach photos and embossed images to rose parchment mat (figure A). Trim to create a narrow mat border.

    4. Attach the rose parchment mat to dark blue card stock. Trim to create a narrow blue border.

    5. Attach the mat to the burgundy card stock. Trim to leave a 1-inch border of burgundy measured from the rose parchment border.

    6. Attach mat to blue stripe background, leaving a 3/8-inch border along top and left side.

    7. To create the word blocks: Stamp or print words on card stock and cut into 2-inch squares: two dark blue, two rose parchment, two blue parchment and one burgundy (figure B).

    8. Attach word blocks to background as shown.
