3-D Patchwork Quilted Paper From "Scrapbooking" episode SCB-407

A new simple folding technique transforms this page into a "quilted" wonder. The paper is folded in two different directions to create depth and drama on the finished page. Squares of coordinating decorative paper are added to create a patchwork effect. Button details accent the finished folds, creating a tufted look for a unique twist on paper quilting.

Materials:

Anna Griffin 12" x 12" decorative papers
scoring tool
45-degree triangle
ruler
card stock
craft knife
buttons
embroidery floss
foam adhesive
scissors

1. Working on the back of a 12" x 12" sheet of paper, use a ruler to mark at 2", 2-1/4" 6", 6-1/4", 10" and 10-1/4" along the right and left sides of the paper.

2. Use the triangle and pencil or just a scoring tool to mark and/or score marks diagonally across the paper from both sides (figure A). When completed, there will be a series of score lines going in both diagonal directions across the paper.

3. Pleat along these score lines so that the pleats are facing the bottom of the page (figure B). By pleating both sets of diagonals in the same direction, the paper comes out layered and having more dimension.

Note: Tape to hold pleats in place as you go, if desired (figure C).

4. Apply adhesive to the back of each square and mount onto card stock, tucking each pleat neatly as it is adhered. The completed pleats look like a tufted quilt.

5. Use a ruler and a craft knife to trim the pleated page to 10 inches square (figure D).

Note: The ends of the pleated piece will not be even to begin with, but this trimming finishes the page. Be sure to trim the piece to size evenly, so that the center diamond stays in the center.

6. Mount the pleated piece to the background paper. Add stripes around the pleated piece and miter corners (figure E).

7. Add 2-inch square sections of decorative paper to four of the squares (figure F).

8. Mat photos and add to page. Print journaling onto card stock (figure G).

9. Tie embroidery floss through the buttons. Mount buttons to page with foam adhesive (figure H).
