Project by Charlotte Lyons.Just like memory itself, collage is all about collecting and layering. Use these techniques to make your scrapbook pages tell a sensory story through collected textiles, paint on paper, and a vellum pocket for a photograph.
On this layout, paint for paper combines with hand-carved stamps to recreate old-fashioned patterns and dimension as a base for layers to follow. Print a quote onto vellum that you trim and fold to make a pocket for textiles and a snapshot. This dainty pocket is finished with actual stitching for more sensory appeal and centers on the painted background. Final ornaments include fitting collage elements such as millinery flowers, leaves, lace and buttons.

collage materials: 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" photograph, copy of old letter, lace, handkerchief, millinery flowers and leaves, buttons, etc.
1. Use foam brush to streak yellow paint across card stock in rough horizontal strokes (figure A). Allow to dry. 2. Carve potato into two flower shapes (figure B). Carve carrot into a leaf shape.
3. Use foam brush and Papier Paint to paint potato stamps (figure C) and stamp flowers onto card stock. Stamp carrot leaf stamp in the same manner using a foam brush and Papier Paint.
Hint: Place flower clusters in three places to create a visual triangle: top left, top right, bottom center (figure D).
4. Use artist's brush to paint small vines and accent leaves that lead paintwork out to edges of paper. Also use artist's brush to add flower centers and subtle highlights on flowers.
5. Tear letter into two 1-inch strips. Attach to top and middle bottom of page.
6. On the computer, use your favorite font to print a quote or journaling that fits your photograph. Use the editing feature to call out words or phrases in larger fonts and colors. Print on vellum (figure E).
7. Trim the quote to 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" with quote near top of strip.
8. Use paper edgers to make a decorative edge on the top edge of the vellum, 3/4 inch above top of quote.
9. Fold 3/4 inch below quote to create a pocket. Stitch along sides and bottom, finishing the pocket shape. Clip threads leaving tails roughly 2 inches long.
10. Center and attach pocket using paper adhesive of choice.
11. Fill pocket with snapshot photograph and folded handkerchief (figure F). Do not adhere these elements. They should be removable.
12. Add flowers, leaves, buttons, and lace with foam brush and gel medium. Arrange these elements so that the eye moves from one area to another naturally.
