Materials: air-dry clay rubber stamps and inks decorative nailhead (optional) Wax paper tape rolling pin razor blade or sharp scissors baking rack or cookie sheet cutting board specialty paints, colored pencils, chalks or metallic pens (optional)
- To prepare work surface, tape a large piece of wax paper to countertop or table.
- Pinch off about two tablespoons of air-dry clay.
- Roll clay to form a ball, then use small rolling pin to roll clay to the width of two nickels. Set clay aside.
- Ink desired stamp (for best results, a stamp with depth for a good impression) and press into clay. For additional embellishment, consider adding a decorative nailhead (figure A), or try poking holes through clay medallion through which wire or fiber can be woven through later.
- Use sharp scissors or carefully use a razor blade to trim excess clay away from your stamped image (figure B).
- Lay completed clay piece flat on top of a baking rack. Flip piece over every 2 hours or as the piece begins to curve. Flipping the finished piece and laying a cutting board over it as it dries will help to keep flat. (Drying time can be up to 48 hours, but can also be expedited by baking the piece in an oven at 250 degrees for 25 minutes or until dry.)
- Embellish the dried medallion as desired.
