Mary O'Neil, owner and founder of Hot PotatoesB. Rubber Stamps, show how to create rich-looking embossed velvet using only water, an iron and some of her big, bold rubber-stamp designs. Here's how to make an embossed-velvet matte for a picture.

    Materials:

    Picture frame with matte
Silk or rayon velvet cut about 1" larger than the frame's matte
    Iron
    Distilled water in spray bottle
    Scissors
    Permanent marking pen
    Optional: spray adhesive
    Optional: tape
    Cardboard
    Frame brads or small nails
    Small finishing hammer

    1. Place the velvet face down, and center the picture-frame matte on it. With a marking pen, draw around the opening of the matte. This area will not be seen when the project is complete. Set the matte aside for later use (figure A).

    2. Turn the velvet right side up, and spray a small area with water.

    3. Place the stamp, rubber side up, on the work surface, and place the right side of the damp velvet over it (figure B). Place an iron (dry wool setting) on the velvet over the stamp. Hold for 20 seconds. Do not move the iron back and forth. Try to avoid placing the iron's steam vents over the stamp (figure C).

    4. Continue embossing the entire piece of velvet in this manner, placing the rubber stamp in a random design.

    5. Place the fabric wrong side up. Using scissors, cut an X inside the previously drawn outline of the matte opening, cutting diagonally from corner to corner (figure D).

    6. Spray the back of the matte with spray adhesive, and place it face down on the wrong side of the velvet so the outline aligns with the matte center opening. Pull the triangle-shaped center pieces created by cutting the X over the matte, and attach them to the back of the matte. Note: If you'd prefer not to use spray adhesive, you can tape down the velvet (figure E).

    7. Tape the picture to be framed face side down onto the matte, centered in the matte opening (figure F).

    8. Place the matte and photo in the frame. Stick the outer edges of the velvet to the back of the matte. Finish the frame by inserting a piece of cardboard cut to the size of the frame back. This will keep the photo flush with the matte and the matte in place. Use small finishing nails or brads to secure the cardboard.
