    Figure D

Beth Clark of the Personal Stamp Exchange decorates a wooden recipe box with rubber stamps and bright watercolor markers.

    Materials:

    Unfinished wooden recipe box
    Screwdriver
    Fine sandpaper
    Off-white acrylic paint
    Water
    Small bowls
Acrylic paint for inside of box
    Brown acrylic paint
    Stencil brush or toothbrush
    Post-ItB. Notes
Rubber stamps in a variety of vegetable and flower shapes
    Sponge brush
    Scissors
    Rubber-stamp ink pad
    Black fabric paint
    Paper towels
    Watercolor markers
    Recipe cards

    1. With the screwdriver, remove the hinges and any other hardware from the recipe box. Lightly sand the box. Wipe with a paper towel to remove all particles.

    2. Thin off-white acrylic paint with a little water in a small bowl. Using a sponge brush, apply white paint to one side of the box. Wait 1 minute, and wipe the paint with a paper towel. This will leave a "whitewashed" finish with a little of the wood grain showing through. Repeat on all sides. Paint the inside of the box any color you like. Let the paint dry completely.

    3. Spread black fabric paint on a rubber-stamp ink pad. Fabric paint is used because it's permanent and leaves a bold outline. Load a rubber stamp with paint by tapping it lightly on the ink pad. Press the stamp onto paper to test. Reload the rubber stamp, and stamp the image onto the recipe box (figure A).

    4. Continue stamping images on the entire box, and let it dry.

    5. Color in the rubber-stamped images with watercolor markers. Beth used bright red on a tomato stamp with green accents (figure B).

    6. Stamp the same images used on the recipe box onto Post-It Notes and cut them out. Cover the stamped images on the recipe box with the cutouts to protect the images from getting speckled by the process described in step 7 (figure C).

    7. Thin brown acrylic paint with water in a small bowl. Dip a toothbrush or stencil brush into the thinned paint, and run your thumb over the bristles, flicking specks of paint onto the box. Speckle all sides (figure D). Remove the Post-It Notes.
    8. Replace the hardware. Stamp matching recipe cards, if desired .
