    Foil Framed Mirror

    Project designed by Barbara Matthiessen.

    Materials:

framed mirror (a black frame works best so the mirror won't reflect back)
    red foil 9" x 15"
    black acrylic paint
    paper towels
    paintbrush
    stylus
    craft knife
    scissors
    cutting mat
    ruler
    stencils
    double-stick tape
    glue or glass medium
    clear sealer

    1. Remove the mirror from the frame and clip off any staples from the back of the frame to help the mirror stay in place.

    2. Place a small stack of paper towels down under the foil. Center the frame over the wrong side of the foil and trace around it with a stylus.

    3. Line up the stencil in the center of the stylus marks and emboss using the stylus, shapes, letters or numbers (figure A). Make sure to place your stencil backwards so that the letters or numbers will be correct on the front of the foil.

    4. Add glue or a gloss medium to the backside of the pattern in the foil to keep the design from collapsing (figure B) and let dry.

    5. Remove the frame and cut at least one inch around the traced edge of the frame.

    6. Spray with a clear sealer.

    7. Using scissors, cut out the center of the foil in an "X" pattern (figure C).

    8. Apply double-stick tape to the inner and outer edge of the frame.

    9. Place frame on the foil and fold in the outside edges of the frame folding in the corners of the frame in a package fold (figure D). You can use the stylus to smooth it out.

    10. Now fold in the center flaps to the back of the frame.

    11. Rub the edges of the frame smooth with the side of the stylus.

    12. Brush black paint liberally over the front of the frame and then rub off some of the paint with a paper towel (figure E) and let dry.

    13. Place mirror into the frame.
