- To achieve a 3-D effect cut up a postcard for the foreground and background.
- Cut neatly around the outline of the foreground figure (or main object in the postcard).
- Separate the foreground figure (figure A) from the background.
- Take a piece of foam board (the backing of the shadowbox) and apply some craft glue and paste on the background images(s). This is the part that will be flat on the foam board surface (figure B).
Note: With this project you want to create a feeling of depth the 3-D magic. - To create the illusion of depth, use some chopped up pieces of foam board that will become the middle layer of the 3-D shadowbox. Glue the background (or in this case, middle ground) imagery on the small pieces of foam board and place much like a puzzle on the solid piece of foam board.
Tip: The key to the 3-D shadowbox is to layer. Jennifer Perkins describes it as "one puff up" with the chopped foam board and "two puffs up" for the foreground image. In all, you'll create three layers flat (background), middle and the foreground (main image). - Apply craft glue to the back of the main (foreground) image and place a small piece of chopped foam board and position on the whole piece of foam board (figure C).
- Let the glue dry.
- While the glue is drying, assemble the box by using cut pieces of foam board and craft glue. You'll determine the dimensions of the shadowbox.
- Take a small paintbrush and decoupage medium and add glitter as you desire. For example, Jennifer Perkins created a shadowbox featuring a senorita. She applied glitter to her lips, and she coated the sides of the shadowbox with glitter. A thin layer of glitter works perfectly. And once the glue dries, simply shake the excess glitter off.
Tip: Be creative, have fun and add sparkle wherever you desire. Q: Do you know the two most common uses of glitter? A: Makeup and plastics.
