In this Get Framed project, host Shahnaz LaCaze helps frame a valuable serigraph. In this third phase of the project, Shahnaz shows how to jazz up the frame with a unique embellishment that perfectly reflects a key image in the artwork itself. She uses the bells of a tambourine on all four corners of the frame, complementing the celebratory theme of the piece and giving reference to the tambourine in the painting. Finally, we fit the frame with our artwork and mat combo.Materials: tambourine bells (available at music stores) sandpaper antique gold ("rub & buff") paint brush black acrylic paint & sponge brush drill upholstery nails pre-cut UV Plexiglas® (cut to size of frame) torn t-shirt plexi-cleaner pressurized "air-in-a-can" bump-ons pair of pliers hammer nails (small) foam core (one piece, cut to size of frame) butcher block paper (cut to size slightly larger than frame)
Steps:1. Easy frame embellishments. One of the key images in the piece is a tambourine, so we will apply some tambourine bells on all four corners of the frame. But first we will need to age them so the finish blends nicely with the total look of the artwork and frame.
- Rub sandpaper on the bells to scruff them up and take off some of the brass finish (figure A).
- Then smooth on a light coat of the antique gold "rub and buff" with a paintbrush (figure B).
Once the "rub and buff" is dry, dab a little bit of black acrylic paint with a sponge brush onto the bells, smooth over in a light circular motion (figure C). This will create a nice "aged" look to the bells. With a tape measure, find the center of the corner of the frame (figure D).
Pre-drill tiny holes (the size of upholstery nails) in all four corners of the frame (figure E).Take two bells and place the upholstery nail through the holes of the bells and then push the nail down through the pre-drilled hole in the corner, securing the tambourine bells tightly (figure F). Repeat this process on the remaining 3 corners.
