  • Keeping the spontaneity going with gallery additions that can change daily
    From "Get Framed"
    episode DGFR-102

    The finished child's art gallery.
In this project Shahnaz LaCaze, host of DIY's Get Framed shows her student Julie Ward how to create a color-coordinated trio of frames that turns a blank wall into an artist gallery for a child's room.

In this final phase of the project, Shahnaz will show Julie how she can make decorative and useful items--a chalkboard and corkboard--with the remaining two frames that match our "Picture of the Week" frame just completed. Shahnaz also shows a cool artistic touch using only a pencil and tracing paper.

    Materials:

butcher block paper or drop cloth to protect your work surface
    chalkboard paint
    small paint roller
    small roller tray
18x24" piece of hard board or masonite board
    glazier point nails
    screwdriver (with 1/4 inch head)
    hammer
    clamps (two)
    roll of cork (18"x24")
    piece of foam core (18"x24")
acrylic paint in primary red, blue, yellow and white.
    paint brushes
    tracing paper
    charcoal pencil

Important: Protect your work surface with butcher block paper or drop cloth.

    Chalkboard With Ledge

    • Paint your hard board or masonite board using chalkboard paint. A couple of coats will provide a nice finish (figure A).

Important: Chalkboard paint dries relatively quickly--in about 20 minutes or so--however it requires three days drying time before you can write on it.

    • Turn second frame over and insert your chalkboard face down. To hold the chalkboard in place, use glazier point nails (figure B). These are available at hardware stores).

Tip: To attach the nails, you'll need a screwdriver with a head the same width as the glazier point nail--about a 1/4 inch.

      • Place your nail with the point towards the wood and hold your screwdriver parallel to the frame. Then take your hammer and tap the glazier point into the frame (figure C).

      • You'll need about six points in all evenly spaced around your frame.

      • Turn the frame and attached chalkboard face-up again in order to attach the ledge that we painted earlier. Align the bottom of the ledge to the end of the frame and place wood glue on both (figure D).

      • Clamp the ends to hold in place while drying. Allow it dry for about one hour (figures E).
