In this project, Get Framed host Shahnaz LaCaze shows amateur photographer Briana Ryan how to transform black and white photos with blasts of color and add depth by making them 3D for even greater impact. Next, they frame the images in an unusual way to be displayed "off the wall." Finally, Shahnaz demonstrates how to finish the frames with fabric for a custom look. Materials: black and white photos on matte photo paper (multiple copies printed in high contrast) photo paint kit (available at camera shops) paint palette cotton swabs and cotton balls ready-made shadowbox frame craft knife
Did you know you can paint black and white photos? Framing expert Shahnaz LaCaze shows how you can add life and vibrancy to old black and whites by painting on color. It's a simple project that involved making copies on matte photo paper and using a photo paint kit. But before we can begin, Shahnaz let's us in on the most important framers tip--measure, measure, measure!- The first step in every framing project is to measure your artwork to determine the size of your frame. For this project we need an 8x10 ready made shadowbox (figure A) because we want to make our photos 3D, and only a shadowbox will provide the frame depth needed.
- Protect your work surface (figure B). To do this you can use butcher-block paper and/or cardboard.
Here is what comes in the ready made shadowbox frame (figures C and D):
- basic frame
- spacer
- glass
- backing
The spacer is the key ingredient since it helps us determine the size of the project. Because the spacer fits around the sides of the shadow box, you'll need to trim to make allowance for the spacer.
