  • Double-Sided Adhesive Masking
  • Learn a fun sand technique for creating unique photo images.
    From "Craft Lab"
    episode DCLB-159

Guest Pamela Smart joins host Jennifer Perkins and prints out a colorful abstract image, and then covers it with a double-sided adhesive masking. The protected side of the masking is taken off in portions to expose one section at a time. Colored sand that corresponds to the exposed area is poured onto the stick surface one at a time until an image is created with sand.

    Figure B
    Double-Sided Adhesive Masking

    Project designed by Pamela Smart.

    Materials:

    double-sided adhesive masking
    glitter
    colored sand
    tiny beads
    craft knife
    cutting surface
beading tray or large sheet of paper
    clip art image
    ink jet printer

    1. Print your image on double-sided paper backed sheet (like Double Tack by Grafix) using an ink jet printer.

    2. Trim around the printed image, remove the paper liner from the UNPRINTED side of the sheet and adhere to your project.

    3. Using a craft knife, cut around the portion of the image you want to bead/glitter/sand and peel it away, exposing the adhesive.

    4. Over a tray or large sheet of paper, pour your glitter/beads/sand over the image to cover the exposed area (figure A and figure B).

    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining areas of your image.

Tip: If you would like to bead only a portion of an image, print the image on a separate sheet and then print the same image on the adhesive sheet. Cut out only the portion of the image you wish to embellish and line it up on the full printout before adhering. Now you can remove the liner and add your beads. They will only stick to the portion of the image that has the double-sided adhesive on it.
