    Materials:

    paper grocery or lunch bags
    scissors
    aluminum foil
    découpage medium
old mixing bowl (for the glue solution)
    craft paint
    two sponge brushes
bowl (to use as a form)
    magazine clippings (images and/or text)
    optional: clear glossy varnish

    1. Turn the bowl that will serve as the mold upside down and cover the outside with two layers of aluminum foil. Fold excess foil into the interior of the bowl (figure A).

    3. Mix four parts découpage medium with one part water in a mixing bowl. Soak each paper bag strip in the solution and place on the bottom of the foil-covered bowl, overlapping strips to cover the bottom (figure C). Continue adding strips until 3-4 layers of paper cover the bottom of the bowl.

    4. Dry the bowl in the sun for several hours or in an oven set on low for 30-45 minutes.

    5. When the dish is dry, gently peel the foil off the inside of the bowl, releasing the bowl from the paper shell. Gently peel foil from the paper shell (figure D). Trim the rim as necessary with scissors.

    6. Using a sponge brush, paint the interior and exterior of the paper bowl with craft paint and let dry (figure E).

    7. Using a second sponge brush, coat the back side of the magazine clippings with découpage medium solution. Completely cover the interior and exterior of the bowl with clippings, apply a coat of découpage medium solution and let dry (figure F).

    8. Optional: Add paint details and, for a polished appearance, coat the bowl with a layer of clear glossy varnish and let dry (figure G).
