    Project Designed by Traci Bautista

    Materials:

    freezer paper
    deli paper
    dyed paper towels
photocopy of doodles or any line art (images or words)
    Elmer's Glue-All
    water
    disposable cup
    2" flat brush
    Soft Gel Gloss Medium (Golden)

    Fusion Dyed Collage

    1. The basic technique for layering dyed paper towels on freezer paper is to mix PVA with water (4:1 ratio glue to water) in a large plastic cup. With a 2" flat brush, spread PVA mixture over the shiny surface of an 18" x 30" piece of freezer paper. Pull apart layers of pre-dyed two-ply paper towels. Place a single layer of the dyed paper towel onto glued surface. Coat the top of paper towel with a layer of PVA mixture. Continue to layer dyed paper towels, overlapping the edges to fill the entire piece of freezer paper, coating each layer of the collage as you go. Cut shapes like hearts or flowers from the dyed towels and adhere with PVA mixture, building up the layers of the collage. Let collage dry completely. Once dry, peel carefully from the freezer paper and you have a beautiful transparent collage.

    2. To create fusion-dyed paper towels over black and white backgrounds, you need gater dyed paper towels that you have made previously such as when you were cleaning up your paints or from dip dyeing.

    3. Mix four parts of glue with one part of water in a disposable cup. Set a piece of freezer paper on your work surface. Place a piece of deli paper over the freezer paper. Cut apart various pieces of black and white art from your photocopies. Brush glue over the top of the images as well.

    4. Pull apart layers of pre-dyed two-ply paper towels. Cut sections of the dyed paper towels apart. Place a single layer of the dyed paper towel onto glued surface. If the paper towels are dry, dampen the sections a bit with water and then adhere them over the photocopy collage. Brush glue over the top of the paper towels. You can fold up the sections of paper towels that hang over the edge of the deli paper.

    5. Continue covering the photocopy collage with paper towel sections until it is full. Cut out shapes from the paper towels to collage over the top of the sections that are already down.

    6. Apply a layer of soft gel gloss medium over the finished collage, if you desire a glossy finish. After the collage is dry, one thing you can do to it is sew it on. Experiment with sewing on transparencies and with sewing freestyle images like flowers.

    7. You can use a sewing machine to create freestyle switching accenting the fusion dyed collage with a contrasting colored thread to highlight shapes and edges.

Tips on creating black and white background papers.

    • You can enlarge images and words on a copy machine to create interesting, bold black/white art backgrounds. Create themed backgrounds with various words and symbols in Photoshop or MS Word.

    • Enlarge fonts, dictionary pages and maps.

    • Create brush marks with black Sumi ink or use an eyedropper to make ink doodle backgrounds.

    • Copy and enlarge written journal pages, handwritten letters.
