Project by Paula Hallinan.Using iridescent dimensional paint with stencils is a quick way to make a thank you note in just minutes. This is a great way to use your intricate and detailed brass stencils without dry embossing. The inside of the card is done with dry embossing and a sponge-coloring technique.
Materials:Heritage Handcrafts stencils:
- three flower pots XL-39
- small dragonfly KEH-58
- thank you JLH-71
iridescent pearl dimensional paint
palette knife or craft stick
make-up sponge wedges
sponge tool *
layers of green papers
double-stick tape
scissors
dark multicolor ink pad
primary colors multicolor ink pad
finger sponge daubers
wax paper
drafting/removable tape
light box
stylus/embossing tool
embossing powders and heat gun or glitter
* see step 13, below
1. For the card front: Lay three pots stencil on paper and tape in place using removable tape.
Note: To shield paper from excess paint, tape all four sides of stencil.
2. With a craft stick or palette knife, spread a spoonful of dimensional paint across the open areas of the stencil (figure A).
3. Scrape off all excess paint and put back in the jar.
4. Sprinkle with glitter or embossing powder and heat to emboss, if desired (figure B).
5. Carefully remove all tape and allow to dry for 15 to 25 minutes.
6. Repeat process with dragonfly stencil and allow to dry (figure C).
7. Trim paper and mount on other green papers including light green paper, which also makes the inside of the card.
8. For the inside of the card: Tape in place thank you stencil with removable tape. Note: This stencil also has flowers on it that we didnt use in the card, so the flowers were masked off with tape (figure D).
9. Turn paper face down on light box. Rub back of paper with wax paper to help the embosser glide over it more easily. Use a stylus or embossing tool to trace the words.
10. Leave stencil taped in place. Use a finger dauber and tap onto ink, then tap or swirl ink into open areas of the Thank You. Note: Finger daubers are great for large open areas or areas that will only be one color. Use a sponge tool for smaller areas.
11. Remove stencil and tape (figure E).
12. Repeat embossing and coloring with ink for dragonfly stencil.
13. Repeat embossing for flower pot design. To color these smaller areas, use a sponge tool (figure F). Shade flower pot by using black or dark brown.
To make a sponge tool: Using a make-up sponge wedge, tear off a small piece of sponge and clamp into jaws of sponge tool. Tap onto ink, and dab onto open areas of stencil. Use a new piece of sponge per color.
14. Remove tape and stencil from card. Ink is already dry because you only use a tiny amount of ink on sponges.
