In this particular project, we will be painting a flaming board.
- Begin the prep work on the deck by scuffing the surface to be painted with a Scotchbrite pad. This will help promote adhesion and will knock down any surface clear that exists on the deck.
- Finish surface preparation by cleaning with a post sanding solvent available at any auto paint store.
- Spray two to three coats of adhesion promoter, following the manufacturer's specifications. Allow to dry.
- Screw the deck to a scrap of plywood (through the wheel hardware holes) and set up on an easel. Using a tack rag, dust off any foreign particles from the deck and clean the surface with the wax and grease remover.
- Mix a base coat black and spray two to three coats using a HVLP spray gun. Tack and clean.
- Next, with the airbrush, mix a base yellow and begin to build the body of the fire from one side of the deck to the other using the stencil. Remember to keep the patterns heavy at the base of the fire and less dense as it extends the length of the board. Also vary the "crispness" of the flames by rotating your stencil and letting areas of background color remain. Tack and clean.
- Proceed to spray Tangerine in the same manner. Allow some gold to remain and spray the tangerine the most intense at the top of all flame "licks". Tack and clean.
- Finish the flames with Kandy Apple Red. Spray this color only in the outer most areas and in the deepest pockets of the design. Keep to a minimum.
- Tack and clean the entire deck and spray final clear coat following manufacturer's specifications using HVLP gun. Allow to fully cure.
- Remove all masking tape. Buff and polish clear coat.
