Allison Whitlock and her guests, John Minardi, Eunice Cho and Travis Meinolf, of the craft group Follow Through Design, create a monster toilet-paper cozy, a magazine holder and a desktop fiend who can hold anything from your iPod to your "iGlasses."
TP MonsterIt's easy to make little creatures that also have a function. Eunice Cho shows how to make a simple toilet-paper cozy that gives your tissue some personality; then John Minardi adds a simple face with embroidery thread and buttons.
Materials:brown combed cotton twill (heavyweight) 2 standard shirt buttons (eyes) stick (from a tree) felt for detail work DMC embroidery floss sewing machine hand sewing needle ("sharps" are suggested) scissors 1. Cut out a rectangle and a circle based on the pattern (figure A) or on your favorite brand of toilet paper (they vary in size). 2. Sew the two far ends of the rectangle together, making a tube. Check and see that it fits on the toilet paper.
3. Hem one of the ends of the tube (like a pants leg). If you'd rather not hem, then just roll the end over a couple of times and stitch it (figure B).
4. With the tube still inside out, pin the circle to the "unhemmed" side of the tube (figure C); then stitch it on using the sewing machine (figure D) (be sure to sew slowly).
5. Sew on the face; you can use virtually any decorating materials you want (shirt buttons and embroidery floss are easily accessible). Flip it inside out and topstitch the face on the side (figure E).
