    Hawaiian Motif Handbag

    Amie Hirtes, a member of NexGeneration, transforms an ordinary crochet bag into a three-dimensional Hawaiian-themed tote trimmed with crochet.

    Materials:

    Hawaiian Motif Crochet Handbag (to order pattern, see Resources, below)
    crochet hook, US size D/3 (3.25mm)
    Karabella Aurora 8 yarn, colors #6 and #27 (1 skein of each)
    tapestry needle

    Dimensions: 3" wide and 3" high

    Stitches and abbreviations used:
    ch(s) chain(s)
    dc double crochet
    hdc half double crochet
    inc increase
    rnd round
    sc single crochet
    sl st slip stitch
    st stitch
    tr treble crochet

    Tip: To work inc: 2 sc in same st.

    Flower

    Outside:
    Leaving a long tail for sewing and using orange yarn, ch 2.

    Round 1: (8 sc) in first ch, sl st to first sc; 8 sc made.

    Round 2: Ch 1, inc in each sc around, sl st to first sc; 16 sc made (figure A).

    Round 3: *Ch 7, sl st in second ch from hook and next 5 chs (petal base made) (figure B), sl st in next 3 sc on rnd*, repeat from * to around, sl st in last st; 5 petal bases made.

    Round 4: *Working up petal base, hdc, dc, tr twice, (tr, dc, hdc) in next sl st, skip next sl st, sc in sl st at top of petal base. Working down petal base, skip next sl st (hdc, dc, tr) in next sl st, tr twice, dc, hdc. Sl st in next 3 sc on rnd*, repeat from * to * around, sl st in last sl st; 91 sts made (figure C).

    Inside:
    Round 5: Using brown yarn, sl st to first rnd of flower, ch 7, (sc, hdc twice, sc) in second ch from hook, sl st in remaining ch(s), sl st to same spot on rnd 1; 17 sts made.

    Leaf

    With brown yarn, and leaving a long tail for sewing, ch 32 (figure D).

    Row 1: Working in back loops only, sl st in second and third chs from hook, 6 sc, 6 hdc, 9 dc, 8 tr, switching to green yarn in last st; 31 sts made (figure E).

    Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc,) turn. Dc in first st, *2 dc, hdc, 3 sc, hdc*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, sc, 5 sc in last sl st.     Adding the embellishments:
    Thread the yarn tail from the leaf onto a tapestry needle. Sew onto the lower left corner of the bag, working through only the center of the leaf and sewing it only halfway into the bag (to avoid the stitches being seen on the inside.) Sew on the flowers, overlapping them on top of the leaf (figure J).
