  • Tolliver Family Room
  • A lackluster great room gets a family-friendly makeover.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-204

    (Continued from page 2)

Kelly Keener shows Shannon Tolliver how to give an old coffee table a facelift. High-density foam is fastened to the top of the table; then the table is covered with faux leather and secured with staples.

    Materials:

    fabric
    foam
    scissors
    staple gun/staples
    measuring tape
    spray adhesive

1, Spray the top of the coffee table with spray adhesive and press the foam in place on top of the table so that the edges are even with the edges of the table.

    2. Measure the size of the table with the foam in place, remembering to add a couple of extra inches for the stapling allowance. Cut the fabric accordingly.

    3. Lay the fabric face down on the work surface and lay the coffee table upside down on top of it.

    4. Start at the center and anchor the fabric with a staple, then staple the center of the opposite side. Continue stapling, working your way out from the center on each side, leaving the corners for last.

    5. For a finished look, miter the corners.

Finally the Material Girls add the finishing touches to the different zones in the room: Lots of decorative pillows are added to the couch, and large pillows are placed on the floor; a table runner and chair cushions are added to the dining area; the large windows are decorated with curtains; a separate round table with chairs creates a cozy area for two. The finishing touch is a large piece of fabric wall art to complement the scale of the room.
