  • Tolliver Family Room
  • A lackluster great room gets a family-friendly makeover.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-204

The Tolliver family needs a more functional great room, so they ask the Material Girls for help. The girls recommend a palette of blue, green, yellow and terra-cotta fabrics to divide the room into zones and create a cozy atmosphere. First Dwight and Shannon Tolliver get started by painting the room a light blue-gray; then April Eden and Shannon make room divider panels that will hang from the ceiling to separate the kids' play area from the rest of the room.

    Room Divider Panels
    Materials:

    fabric
    lining
    scissors
    sewing machine
    measuring tape
    iron
    pins
    hooks
    chain

    1. Determine the length of the panels by measuring from the floor to the ceiling. Then decide how big of a drop you want between the ceiling and the top of the curtain. Subtract this number from the length to get the finished length for the panels; then determine how wide you want them.

    2. Using these measurements, add 12" to the length for the rod pockets (6" on each side). Then add 6" to the width for seam allowances (3" for each side).

    3. Cut the fabric and the lining according to the measurements (cut them both the same size).

    4. Starting with the side hems, fold one side in 3" and press. Now, to remove some excess material, fold the fabric back open and cut only the lining at the fold line.

    5. Fold the fabric back over and turn under a 1-1/2" hem. Press and pin in place. Repeat this process on the opposite side and sew with a straight stitch.

    6. To make the rod pocket, start at one end and fold the fabric up 6"; then double the fold on itself for a finished width of 3". Press and pin in place. Repeat the same process on the opposite side.

    7. Simply sew a straight stitch across the bottom of the fold.

    8. Hang the panels from the ceiling using hooks and a chain.
