    The members of Squares step it up a stitch with cool projects that take ordinary embroidery and sewing to another level. Karina Martens starts things off by demonstrating her embroidered photo technique.

    Embroidered Photo
    Materials:

    photo:
    photograph or digital camera
    computer with a printer
    scanner
    Photoshop or other photo-editing software program
    iron
    ironing board
    timer
    DMC embroidery floss (about two dozen skeins of assorted colors)
    iron-on fabric transfer kit
    white cotton fabric
    embroidery hoop
    embroidery needle
    cloth scissors

    Final measurement: 8-1/2"x11".

    1. Take a picture of your house and digitize it (figure A). You can scan an existing photo or download a digital photo into a photo-editing program.

    2. Reverse the image using photo-editing software so that it transfers correctly onto the fabric.

    3. Print the photo onto the iron-on transfer paper following the product's printing instructions.

    4. Iron the transfer to white cotton fabric following the products directions. Usually iron-ons require ironing for two minutes, so you may want to use a timer.

    5. Peel off transfer paper after the cloth has cooled.

    6. Secure the cloth in the embroidery hoop and select the colors you wish to use.

    7. Select an area of the picture to start embroidering (figure B).

    8. Follow the pattern of the iron-on transfer until the piece is covered (figure C).
