    Misfit Outfit: The Top
    Materials:

one top (T-shirt, sweatshirt or blouse)
approximately a 6" square of fabric for reverse appliqué.
    one piece of heavy tear-away stabilizer cut to 8 ½" x 11"
    thread to compliment.
    sewing machine with free-motion capability.
    appliqué scissors.
    straight pins.
inkjet printer (optional – for printing onto stabilizer)

    Reverse appliqué:
Choose the fabric to be appliquéed, find position for placement on the shirt and pin to the wrong side of the shirt (figure A). Free-motion machine-quilt around the edges of the design (figure B). Add enough texture with thread to help appliqué stand out. Turn shirt right side out and trim shirt away (figure C). Leave at least a 1/4" of shirt on the inside of the stitching lines.

    Template:
Cut a piece of heavy tear-away stabilizer to 8-1/2"x11" to be fed through the inkjet printer. Print the photo or design onto the stabilizer (figure D). Find the placement on the shirt and pin the stabilizer to the wrong side of the shirt figure E). Free-motion stitch once around the edges of the design (figure F). Tear away all the stabilizer; then go back and add more free-motion stitching.
