  • Placemats, Decorative Vases and Votives
  • Three no-sew projects dress up a dining-room table.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-202

In this segment, Kelly Keener and homeowner Michael Moore give the table extra flair by making placemats and decorative vases and votives (both projects are no-sew). The placemats are made with fusible tape and decorative trim. The vases and votives are wrapped with fabric, ribbons and buttons to create a unique centerpiece for the table.

    Placemats, Decorative Vases and Votives
fabric (#649594, Tegola Mist, by Waverly)
    scissors
    fusible tape
    iron
    trim

    1. Cut the fabric into the desired shape and size for the placemat.

    2. Fold the edges in about 1" and press in place to create a hem.

    3. Place a strip of fusible tape on the inside edge between the fabrics and press down with a hot iron to activate the glue. Hold the iron down for at least five to 10 seconds, depending on the weight of the fabric.

    4. For a decorative touch, add trim to the edges of the placemat with fabric glue or fusible tape, depending on the type of trim you choose to use.

    Fabric-Covered Vases

    Materials:

fabric (#615641, Plantation Sheer Cream; #615642, Plantation Sheer Ecru; #615643, Plantation Sheer Honeysuckle; all by Waverly)
    scissors
    hot glue/hot glue gun
    ribbon/trim/buttons
    vases
    measuring tape
    straightedge ruler

    1. Measure the circumference of the vase; then, using a straightedge ruler, measure and cut the fabric to the size of the vase, adding 1" for the seam.

    2. Apply a line of hot glue down the vase. Press one side of the fabric to the glue, tightly wrap the fabric around the vase and secure it with another line of glue. Trim any excess fabric.

    3. Decorate each vase with your choice of ribbon, trim or buttons.
