    Wine Cozy
1 ball Aunt Lydia’s Denim Quick Crochet
    crochet hook, U.S. size H (5.00 mm)
assorted beads (20 for body and at least 2 for tie)
    clear nail polish
    stitch marker (or safety pin)

    Gauge: Rounds 1-6 = 3-3/8" diameter

Notes: You can substitute any yarn that gives the correct gauge. Using the suggested yarn, one cozy will take about one-third of the 400-yard ball.

This cozy fits standard wine bottles fairly snugly. Test the fit as you work. If you prefer a looser fit or have a slightly larger bottle, use a hook one size larger (I/5.50 mm).

    Abbreviations:
bb sc back bead single crochet
    beg beginning
    blo back loop only
    ch chain
    dc double crochet
    dec sc decrease single crochet
    sc single crochet
    sl st slip stitch
    st stitch

    Special Stitches:

bb-sc Insert hook in st indicated, draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), push up a bead very close to work, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook. Bead will lie on the back side of the stitch.

dec sc Insert hook in st indicated, draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next st, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

    Add Beads:
Stiffen end of yarn with nail polish. Thread 20 beads onto yarn. Push beads along yarn as you are crocheting until they are needed.

    Foundation:
Form an adjustable ring by placing the tail end of the yarn behind the working end, forming a large loop, draw yarn through loop, ch 1 (figure A).

Note: More detailed instructions on the adjustable ring can be found at www.crochetme.com/Dec_Jan_0405/reads_round.html.

Round 1: 8 sc in ring, pull tail end to tighten ring (note: before clipping tail, weave it in securely). Sl st in first sc to join.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around (16 sc). Sl st in first sc to join.

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, sc in last sc (24 sc). Sl st in first sc to join.

Round 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, (sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, sc in each of last 2 sc (32 sc). Sl st in first sc to join.

(Do not yet remove marker from first sl st; it will help you identify when you have reached the end of the next round).

Round 8: This round begins the body of the cozy. Ch 1, turn, sc in blo of each sl st around (note: the last sc goes in the marked sl st; remove marker) (48 sc). Sl st in first sc to join.

Round 10: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc (note: take care not to mistake joining sl st for first sc), place st marker in sc just made, (bb-sc in next sc, sc in next sc) around, bb-sc in last sc (40 sc). Remove st marker and sl st in first sc to join.

Round 11: Ch 1, turn, sc in first bb-sc, place st marker in sc just made, sc in each sc and bb-sc around (note: last sc is made in same sc as joining sl st from beg of this round) (40 sc). Do not join.

Round 12 and up: Remove st marker, sc in first sc and each sc around and around (do not join between rounds or count rounds) until cozy measures 9-1/2" tall, then sl st in next sc to join.

    Finishing Round 2:
Ch 1, sc in same ch as joining sl st, (sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc) around, sc in last ch-1 sp (40 sc). Sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Make Tie: Leaving a 5" tail, ch 95. Fasten off, leaving another 5" tail. Weave tie back and forth through spaces in Finishing Round 1.
