  • Upholstered Wall Panels
  • An alcove in the bedroom receives colorful wall panels, courtesy of Vera's stepdad.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-201

Material Girl Kelly Keener shows David, Vera's stepfather, how to make upholstered wall panels to pad the walls of an alcove the Girls are turning into a "chill lounge." Using fabric, foam and wood, they create the perfect accessory to add contrast, texture and softness to the walls.

Attached to wooden frames over foam padding, fabric panels add brightness and softness to the walls of this European-style alcove.

    spray adhesive
    plywood

    finishing nails
    staple gun
    wood trim
    pencil
    stud finder

    1. Start by laying out a piece of plywood, cut to the desired size of your wall panel. Using spray adhesive, attach a piece of foam (cut to the same size as the plywood) to the plywood board.

    2. Lay the fabric face up on top of the foam, making sure that the pattern is centered correctly. Then carefully flip the panel and fabric over and, pulling the fabric tight, begin stapling the fabric and foam to the plywood. Start at the center of one end, making sure to smooth the fabric as you go. Repeat on all sides.

    3. The next step is to attach the panels to the wall. Start by measuring the center of the panel and marking. Then find the center of the wall and mark. Use a stud finder to locate the studs. Also be sure to measure down from the ceiling to where you want the panel positioned.

    4. Once you have all of the measurements, attach the panel to the wall with screws.

    5. For the finishing touch, attach wood trim along the edges with a nail gun and finishing nails.
