  • Legwarmers
  • Those classic '80s fashion must-haves--legwarmers--are back and better than ever!
    From "Uncommon Threads"
    episode DUCT-126

Candi Cane demonstrates how to create stylish legwarmers from knit fabric and embellish them with appliqués.

    Materials:

knit fabric (2 pieces, approximately 16"x17")*
contrasting knit fabric for appliqués (1 piece, about 20"x20")
fusible interfacing in black (if contrasting color is dark) or white (if it's light)
    1/4 " elastic
notions: iron, sewing machine, scissors, thread, safety pin

*Note: To determine the amount of fabric needed for your legwarmers, you should measure the circumference and length of your calf.

    1. Fuse the interfacing to contrast-knit fabric using an iron and fusible interfacing.

    2. Cut fabric into shapes either heart or stars (you can draw shapes on the reverse side with chalk or just cut freehand).

    3. Pin shapes to legwarmer pieces in any design or pattern you'd like.

    4. Using the machine set on a number-3 zigzag stitch length, stitch around each shape.

    5. Once all pieces are sewn on, turn legwarmers inside out and stitch up side with a 1/2" seam allowance.

    6. At top of legwarmer, fold over 1/2" and stitch, leaving an opening to insert the elastic. Repeat for second legwarmer.

    7. Cut elastic into 2 pieces, each 15" long (or the circumference of your calf minus 1") and insert in opening, using a safety pin to run it through. Stitch elastic pieces together either by machine or by hand. Stitch the opening closed. Repeat for second legwarmer.

    8. To finish off the bottom of the legwarmers and to give a ruffled edge, set the machine on a 0 to 1 zigzag length and stitch the very edge of legwarmer, pulling taut slightly.
