Note: Use fresh/green grapevine for this project. It will weave much more easily through the frame and will keep its shape once it dries.

    • Build a rack for the wreath out of 2x4s. Michele Beschen’s rack measured 30" square.

    • Wrap a piece of tape around a 3/8" drill bit 1" from the end of the bit (figure A). Use this mark to drill 8 holes in the rack, each 1" deep. Make sure the holes are spaced evenly around the outside of the rack.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety glasses and use caution when using an electric drill or other power tools.

    • Place a dab of wood glue in each hole and install a dowel piece in each (figure B). Hammer the dowels in tightly with a mallet.

    • Gather about four pieces of grapevine and wire the ends together. Position one end on the rack and attach it to the frame with a decking screw (figure C).

    • Weave the grapevine around the dowels, working around the perimeter of the rack and going inside and outside the dowels (figure D).

    • Weave in the other direction with smaller single pieces of vine.

    • Continue to wrap and weave until the wreath is as full as desired.

    • Let the wreath dry on the rack for a few days.

    • Remove the decking screws and lift the wreath from the rack. Consider using a little string or wire to help the grapevine hold its shape.

    • Hang the wreath inside or out, decorated with natural elements like pods, seeds, feathers and leaves.
