A leather log carrier and hand-designed matchbox are sure to get those home fires burning

    Leather Log Carrier

    Materials:

    faux leather (16"x28")
flannel fabric (same size as faux leather)
    leather needles
    string
    3/4" webbing (16")
    leather lacing
    woodburning tool
    clothes pins
    pinking shears

    1. Cut the faux leather and flannel into 16"x28" rectangles. Pink the edges of the flannel (figure A). Place wrong sides of fabric together (for ease of handling while sewing, pin fabrics together with clothespins).

    2. Whipstitch around the edges of the carrier with string and a leather needle. Each piece of string should be 3 times the length of the side being stitched; use one piece of string for each side of the carrier, stitching through both layers of fabric and knotting at the corners (figure B).

    3. To make handles, cut the webbing into 16" pieces. Using the woodburning tool and a small tip, burn 4 holes, each spaced approximately 1/2"-1" apart, in each end of the webbing (figure C).

    4. Center the webbing along the edge of the carrier and form a U shape (figure D). Attach handles by lacing through the holes with the leather lacing, making a crisscross shape (figure E).
