  • Talkin' Trash
  • See art potential in everyday things.
    From "B. Original"
    episode DBOR-132

    PHOTO

All it takes is imagination to turn golf clubs and wire into a creature of fantasy.
Artists Brad and Sundie Ruppert talk trash. They also hunt out trash, play with it and make fabulous artwork out of it. Their specialty is creating fun sculptures out of vintage cast-offs, and they rely on their ability to see the artistic potential in what everyone else simply tosses away.

Brad and Sundie took Michele Beschen and B. Original viewers behind the scenes at their studio to show some of their work and talk about seeing the art inside everyday objects. Scroll down to see which of their ideas you can B. Original with and make your own.

Brad and Sundie Ruppert's studio is a rich world of...stuff. From auto parts and dried gourds to baling wire and beaded purses, they collect it all—and find artistic uses for most of it. Unlike many artists, however, they try not to change the pieces they use. Items keep their original shape, whether it's a vintage kitchen tool that serves as a doll's head (figure A) or the logo from an old car emblazoned on a wall piece (figure B).

The outdoor part of the studio houses the couple's larger (and dirtier) art fodder. There, Brad does the bigger pieces and rougher construction. Then, the work moves to the indoor studio, where Sundie draws on her massive collection of odds and ends to crate charming details and depth of design.

Throughout it all, they always look to see what a material can become with a little imagination. Here are some of their inspirations:

    The horn from an old
    phonograph...

    thoughtful elephant.

If Brad and Sundie Ruppert can see the magic in everyday things, so can you. Open your eyes and B. Original with what's around you—who knows where your next masterpiece will come from!
