    • Cut a piece of insulation board to the desired size for the idea board. Michele Beschen's board measured 2 feet by 3 feet. Insulation board comes in a variety of thicknesses and is available at home improvement stores.

    • Cut a piece of batting that is about 12" longer and 12" wider than the board.

    • Using a small amount of spray adhesive, glue the batting to the front of your board, smoothing it out as you go.

    • Choose a piece of fabric—again leaving plenty of overhang around all sides of your board—and smooth it down over the batting.

    • Flip the board over and use small T pins to secure the fabric and batting to the board.

    • The technique for this step resembles upholstering: Working from side to side, pull the fabric tight, fold it over and pin it down tightly (figure A). Make sure you keep the pattern of the fabric straight on the front of the board. When you get to a corner, fold the fabric over and pin down tightly (figure B).

    • To hang the idea board, you'll need about two feet of lightweight chain and two machine screws, each with two washers and one nut.

    • Determine the position for the first screw; Michele Beschen put hers about 2" from the top and 3" from the side of the board. From the front of the board, poke through the fabric and foam with an awl all the way to the other side. Repeat at the other top corner.

    • Insert a screw and washer through each hole, from the front.

    • Flip the board over. Slide a link at one end of the chain over the top of the screw, then tighten down with a washer and nut. Cut the chain to length and secure it to the other machine screw the same way (figure C).

    • Dress up the board by embellishing simple dress pins with beads to hang your ideas.

    • Hang the finished idea board in your closet, and you'll be ready to give yourself a little daily inspiration on what to wear!
