    Materials:

    prepared artist’s canvas
    foam shapes
    spray-on wall and ceiling texture
    spray paint
    tweezers

    • If you want color to show through your shapes, prime and paint your canvas.

    • Choose a shape to repeat across your canvas. Michele Beschen strongly recommends you stick with one shape per canvas for a more attractive, sophisticated design.

    • Adhere your chosen shape to your canvas (figure A). If the foam shapes don’t have adhesive backing, spray them with a light adhesive spray.

    • Don’t be afraid to have your shapes extend past the edge of the canvas. Simply wrap them around the edges.

    • Cans of spray-on texture typically come with different sizes of tips (figure B). Experiment until you find one you like.

    • Spray the texture over your canvas, shapes and all
(figure C). Don’t overspray—the texture will be lumpy as it comes out of the can but will settle in a few minutes.

    • Let the texture dry completely. You can speed the process by using a hairdryer.

    • Spray paint the entire piece in whatever color you choose. Don’t use a roller or brush to apply paint: It will even out the texture and destroy the mottled effect.

    • Before the paint is dry, carefully remove the foam shapes with tweezers (figure D).

When you project is dry, hang it and enjoy!

Experiment with different shapes, colors and textures. You can create a roomful of art in just an afternoon—a quick and easy way to B. Original.
