    Lavender and Rosemary Heating Pad
    Materials:

2 pieces of 100 percent cotton fabric, 12"x13"
4 c. uncooked (not Minute) rice
2 Tbsp. dried lavender and rosemary
    sewing machine
    matching thread
    scissors

    1. Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together and pin in place around the edges. Sew around three sides with 1/2" seam allowance, leaving one end open for turning and filling.

    2. After sewing, trim the seams close to the stitching line; trim the corners at an angle to reduce fabric bulk. Turn the heating pad right side out.

    3. Mix rice, lavender and rosemary in a bowl (figure A). Fill the heating pad with the mixture, adjusting the amount based on personal preference (figure B).

    4. Turn the raw edges of the fabric under 1/2" and pin together (figure C). Catching the opening to sew it shut, topstitch as close to the edge as possible (figure D).

Safety note: Heat the pad in the microwave in increments of one minute only, until the desired warmth is reached. Be careful, as the pad gets hot: always test the temperature before placing the pad next to the skin. Shake the pad to distribute the warm rice evenly before applying to sore muscles.
