  • Handmade Soap, Part 2
  • Your own lemony soap creation is almost ready.
    From "B. Original"
    episode DBOR-148

    PHOTO

Finish your soap with Michele Beschen (right) and Charidy Hight.
Part 1 of this project got the soap making process started:
    B. Original host Michele Beschen and professional soapmaker Charidy Hight prepared their mold and started heating palm oil and coconut oil as the base for the soap. They also measured out lye and mixed it with water.

This part concludes the project, turning the ingredients into a fragrant, handcrafted lemon soap. Scroll down for the rest of the how-to.

    • Once the oils are melted (figure A), remove them from the heat.

    • Add 908 grams of olive oil to the existing palm and coconut oil mixture.

    • Add 15 grams of grapefruit seed extract and stir (figure B).

    • Check to make sure the temperatures of the oil mixture and the lye mixture match. When they both are at 86 degrees, carefully pour the lye into the oils, stirring the mixture as you pour.

Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection and gloves when working with lye, and rinse immediately with cold water if lye comes into contact with your skin. Keep out of the reach of children.

    • Add 26 grams of lemongrass oil and stir.

    • Pour the mixture into the prepared mold (figure C). Make sure you scrape the pan carefully to get all of the soap material out.

    • Lay a piece of freezer paper over the top of the mold, shiny side down. Insulate the mold with a blanket and let it sit for 24 hours.

    • After 24 hours, unmold the soap so the paper is on top. Unfold the corners and remove the paper.

    • Mark your soap slab with a ruler and knife, then cut into slabs (figure D).

    • Let the soap rest in slabs for a week. At that point, you can cut it into bars.
