  • Wine-Dyed Fabric
  • Create a fun look by dyeing fabric with wine.
    From "B. Original"
    episode DBOR-144

Get wine on your clothes on purpose—you'll look great!
Everybody knows how tough red wine stains are to get out. Why not put that stubbornness to work for you by dyeing fabric with red wine?

Michele Beschen, host of B. Original, shows how to use red wine as a dye to add color and interest to fabric. It's a great way to use up wine that's turned sour, and you can wear the final product to parties with confidence. After all, if you spill wine on yourself, you're just adding to a work in progress!

Note: This project uses white wiping cloths instead of regular clothing. You can pick up wiping cloths at home improvement stores; they're made of T-shirt material and intended as rags. Once you are comfortable with your results, you may want to try your hand at wine-dyeing clothing.

    • Lay out your fabric front side up on a piece of cardboard to protect your work surface. You should be working on a hard surface like a countertop.

    • Pour some old wine into a shallow container, like a small baking dish.

    • Dip a wine glass in the wine and press firmly into the fabric (figure A). You'll notice that the lip of the glass gives you a finer line, while the base of the glass spreads out the pattern more. Continue to stamp until you're happy with the piece of fabric.

    • You also can stamp with wine using wine bottles, corks or other objects that interest you (figure B).

    • Once your design is complete (figure C), set the image with heat. Just iron the front of the fabric or run it through the dryer on high heat. Laundry mavens will recall that high heat sets all sorts of stains in fabric.

    • Play around with your newly dyed fabric to see how you'd like to wear it—as scarves, a layered skirt or some other piece (figure D).
