    1. Collect a variety of branches that are anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" in diameter.

    2. Let them dry out if they're still green. The ones for this project ranged in length anywhere from 8" to 12".

    3. Remove the "nubbies" and knots to smooth out the branch.

    4. Whittle down the one end to a smooth taper (figure A) or run through a pencil sharpener.

    5. Carve away some recessed areas throughout the stick and fill with polymer clay.

    6. Trim and bake according to the clay's directions—usually in a 275-degree oven for approximately 20-30 minutes.

    7. Spray with a couple coats of polyurethane to seal.

      Note: Be sure to coat the pointed end with a good amount of sealer or wax to ensure that it doesn't split.
