Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza turn old license plates into funky new scrapbooks.

    License-Plate Scrapbook
    Materials:

    2 license plates
    2 1" loose-leaf rings (available at office-supply stores)
    cardstock scrapbook paper
    acid-free glue stick
    grommets (2 per page)
    grommet setter
    hole punch
    small craft hammer
    2 pieces decorative scrapbook papers
    scrapbook alphabet embellishments
    scrapbook eyelets and setter
    scissors
    ruler

    1. Using a paper cutter or scissors and a ruler, trim the cardstock paper to fit just inside the license plate. Line up the trimmed cardstock with the license plate and use a pencil to mark where the existing holes on the license plate are. Using a hole punch, punch holes in the cardstock where you made the marks (figure A).

    2. Following the manufacturer's instructions, attach grommets using a craft hammer and the setting tool that comes with the grommets (figure B). Adding grommets will give strength to the paper. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each page you want to make.

    3. Decide on a layout for the pages and decorate each page to your liking, using photos, stickers, ribbons and scrapbook embellishments.

    4. To make our cover page, trim decorative scrapbook papers slightly smaller than the grommeted cardstock. Tear both papers down the long side edge at different widths. Add scrapbook embellishments to the pages. Attach letters of the alphabet (F-A-M-I-L-Y) with an eyelet setter (figure C). Using an acid-free glue stick, layer and glue the torn pages to the grommeted paper.

    5. Using the loose-leaf rings, attach the book together by placing the rings through one license plate, the scrapbook pages (figure D), the cover page and the second license plate. Snap the ring closed (figure E).
