  • Washer Decor
  • Dress up your decor with candleholders, vases, tiles, trivets and stencils—made from washers!
    From "B. Original"
    episode DBOR-102

Washers don't just hold your home together—they also can pull your decor together. Use them as embellishments for tiles and trivets, or as building blocks for candleholders and vases. They even make great stencils for fun, funky designs.

    Wall Tiles and Trivets

    • Glue an arrangement of washers to a 6"x6" tile of thin wood such as Baltic birch or Luan with a clear multipurpose adhesive such as E6000 or Goop.

    • Spray paint or leave as-is for use as decorative tiles or trivets. You may want to add cork backing for trivets (figure A).

    • Remember, the more washers you add, the heavier your tile will be.

    Candleholders and Vases

    • Bring a tapered candle to the hardware store or home center and find large, flat washers with center holes big enough to fit over the candle.

    • Stack washers, using sections of dowel as spacers. Use three or four equal-length pieces of dowel for each level (figure B).

    • Place a smaller fender washer in the bottom of the tower to keep your candle from sliding all the way through.
    • Glue the whole assembly together with a clear, multipurpose adhesive like Goop or E6000. Once the glue is dry, spray paint and decorate however you like (figure C).

    • To make a vase, slide a test tube into the washer tower instead of a candle (figure D).

    Perfect-Circle Stencils

    • Paint a colorful background on a canvas, board or other surface that can lie flat. Let paint dry.

    • Randomly scatter various sized washers all over your canvas. Be sure to let some hang over the edge (figure E).

    • Spray paint over the canvas and washers.

    • Remove washers before the paint dries for an energetic design with perfect circles (figure F).
