Artist Michele Ross demonstrates her techniques to create color, shading and embossed designs on metal. Materials: 30-gauge tooling foil Paper towels Black permanent marker with narrow tip Stylus Battery-operated fireplace lighter or candle Cotton swabs Brushes Decorative and regular scissors Rubber stamps Permanent ink for nonporous surfaces Permanent ink cleaner/remover Fun foam or felt to use as a padded surface Glass paint Paint palette and water container Hole punch - Smooth foil with sides of an old credit card or sturdy cardboard. Then ink the stamp and stamp images onto the foil (figure A). Allow to dry.
- Place the foil on padded surface and outline image with a stylus (figure B ).
- Next, use fireplace lighter (figure C) or candle to burn and color the foil. Hold fire starter on one edge of the piece. Slowly count to four before moving the flame across the back of the piece. Allow flame to touch the foil just long enough to reveal colors. Let copper cool or dip in water before touching.
- Wipe carbon from the foil. Colored markers, glass paint or nail polish can be applied to intensify or correct color. Use cotton swabs to soften the effect and blend colors.
- Use glass paint to protect the copper from tarnish.
